# Pet sitting at home vs boarding: how to choose

By Samantha Anema, HarmonySync Solutions LLC. Updated @@UPDH@@.

**Short answer:** Pet sitting means your pet stays in their own home while someone visits to feed, water, walk and play. Boarding means your pet stays at a facility. Sitting often suits pets who dislike change, while boarding can suit pets who enjoy company. Your pet's temperament is the best guide.

## What is the difference between pet sitting and boarding?

With pet sitting, your pet stays home and a sitter comes to them. With boarding, your pet goes to a facility and stays there until you return.

I do pet sitting in Cedar Falls, Iowa, through HarmonySync Solutions. I am one person, so each visit is with someone your pet gets to know. That is a very different experience from a busy facility, and for many animals it is the calmer one.

## When is pet sitting at home the better choice?

Pet sitting is often better when your pet thrives on routine. Familiar smells, a favorite window and a regular bed can matter a lot to cats, older dogs and nervous animals.

- Your pet gets stressed by car rides or new places
- Your pet is older or has a routine around meals and medication
- You have a cat, which often does best in familiar territory
- You have more than one pet who live happily together at home
- You want your routine, bedding and surroundings to stay as normal as possible

## When might boarding make sense?

Boarding can work well for social, high-energy dogs who love other dogs and enjoy being around people all day. If your dog needs constant company and you are gone for a long trip, a facility with supervised group play may be a good fit.

Boarding can also be useful if your home is not set up for visits or if your pet needs round-the-clock supervision that a visit schedule cannot provide. Be honest about what your pet needs. The best choice is the one that matches the animal, not the one that feels easiest for the owner.

## What does a pet sitting visit include?

A visit from me covers feeding, fresh water, let-outs, walks, playtime and medication if needed. I follow the routine you describe, so your pet's day stays as close to normal as possible.

A signed service agreement and Home Entry Consent are in place before the first visit, and I am First Aid and CPR trained. If you want to understand exactly how visits work for your pet, ask me at the free consultation.

## How do I decide between the two?

Think about your pet first, then your schedule. Picture how your pet reacts when something changes. Do they hide, pace or stop eating? That is a hint that home is the safer place. Do they run to meet every new dog? Boarding may be a happy week.

Next, think about the length of your trip. For a short weekend, either option can work, though many pets handle a weekend at home more easily. For longer absences, plan the visit schedule carefully with your sitter so your pet gets enough attention each day.

Then think about health. If your pet takes medication or has any special needs, make sure whoever cares for them is comfortable with the details. Write out the instructions clearly.

Finally, consider a trial run. Try a short outing or a single visit before a big trip, and watch how your pet responds when you return. Their behavior will tell you a lot.

## Can I meet the sitter before I decide?

Yes, and you should. A free 15-minute consultation is a friendly way to talk through your pet, your home and your routine. Ask any question you like. The right sitter will welcome them.

## What about the cost and convenience?

Convenience is easy to overlook. With a sitter, you skip the drop-off and pickup, and you do not have to pack food, bedding and toys. Your pet's things are already where they belong.

With boarding, you may need to follow facility hours and pack for your pet. For my pet sitting, you can ask me at the consultation how visits fit the length of your trip and what a schedule would look like.

## What signs tell me my pet is stressed by boarding?

Pay attention to how your pet acts when they come home from a stay or a vet visit. Pets that are stressed by new places may refuse food, hide, pace, whine or sleep much more than usual. Some turn clingy for a day or two.

If you see those signs, home care may be the kinder choice. You can also ask whoever cared for your pet how they behaved while you were gone. Those notes are useful for planning the next trip.

Of course, many pets handle boarding well. The point is not that one option is right for everyone. It is that your pet's own behavior is the best guide, so watch for it.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is pet sitting better than boarding for cats?

Many cats do better at home because they are territorial and dislike new places. A sitter can feed them, refresh their water and play with them while they stay in familiar surroundings. Every cat is different, so consider your cat's temperament before you decide.

### What does a pet sitter do on each visit?

On my visits I handle feeding, fresh water, let-outs, walks, playtime and medication if needed. I follow your routine so your pet's day stays as close to normal as possible. Write out your instructions before the first visit so I can match what your pet is used to.

### How do I know if my dog would enjoy boarding?

Dogs who are social, confident around other dogs and comfortable with new places often enjoy boarding. Dogs who get anxious with change may be happier at home. A trial stay before a longer trip can show how your dog really feels.
